Sinus...
 

Sinuses are air containing cavities in certain bones of skull. Sinuses are also know as Paranasal sinuses" and are connected to the nose on the facial part of the skull where mucus drains and air passes. Paranasal sinuses develop as outpouchings from the mucous membrane of lateral wall of nose.

Four pairs of sinus cavities:

Ethmoid sinuses.
Frontal sinuses.
Maxillary (cheekbones) sinuses.
Sphenoid (behind the eyes) sinuses.

Functions of Paranasal sinuses:

1) Air Conditioning of the inspired air by providing large surface area over which the air is humidified and warmed.
2) To Provide resonance to voice
3) To act as thermal insulators to protect the delicate structure in the orbit and
the cranium from variations of intranasal temperature.
4) To lighten the skull bones.

Sinusitis:
Sinusitis is an inflammation of the Paranasal sinuses, which may of may not be a result of infection , form bacteria , fungal, viral, allergic or autoimmune issues. Newer classification rhinosinusitis, taking into account the thought that inflammation of the sinuses cannot occur without associated inflammation of the nose.
 

Common causes of Sinusitis include:
Allergic or autoimmune issues, Air pollution.
Long time cold or flu.
A viral infection on the upper respiratory zone
Fungal infections as these weaken the immune system
Bacterial infections.
Smoking, Stress, Alcohol, Pets, excess Swimming.

Ayurvedic Management of Sinusitis:
(Note - Patients are advise to take these according to physician guidance only).

Nasya karma is a effective therapeutic regimen in most of these conditions. Anu Taila, Shad bindu taila etc. are used for nasya depending upon the dosha dusya conditions. The freshly extracted juice of ginger mixed with eqal quantity of
jaggery is useful to opening upon clogged sinus areas.

Internal medicines like Tribuvana kiriti rasa, mrityunjaya rasa, naradiya laxmi vilasa rasa, chyavanprahsa avaleha, kesari kalpa, agastya haritaki rasayana etc. are used based upon Dashavidha pariksha vishayas.
